Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in a biomechanical assessment?+
A biomechanical assessment includes a full gait analysis, video analysis of your walking and running pattern, joint range-of-motion testing, muscle strength assessment, and footwear evaluation. You'll leave with a clear diagnosis, a tailored treatment plan, and written guidance on next steps. Allow approximately 60 minutes.
Do I need a GP referral to book?+
No — you can book directly without a referral. If you're using private health insurance, check with your insurer first as some policies require pre-authorisation before your first appointment.
How does direct billing work for Bupa, Aviva, and WPA?+
Simply provide your membership number and authorisation code when booking. We'll invoice your insurer directly so you won't need to pay upfront, subject to any policy excess. Please check your policy details before attending as excesses and limits vary.
How many shockwave sessions will I need?+
Most patients see significant improvement after 3–6 sessions, typically spaced one week apart. The number required varies depending on the condition and its severity. We'll give you a clear treatment recommendation following your initial assessment.
What is the difference between prefabricated, semi-custom, and fully custom orthotics?+
Prefabricated insoles are high-quality off-the-shelf devices that work well for many common conditions. Semi-custom orthotics are manufactured to your specific measurements. Fully custom bespoke orthotics are cast from your foot and built entirely to your individual biomechanical requirements — the gold standard for complex or persistent conditions.
Can I pay on the day?+
Yes. We accept all major credit and debit cards on the day of your appointment. Orthotics require a deposit at the time of ordering, with the balance due on collection.
What is your cancellation policy?+
We ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or rearrange. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to a cancellation fee. You can manage your appointment online or by contacting us directly.

“Visited 3 other clinics prior to The Functional Podiatrist. I am so pleased to find a practice who understands my problems. I am pain free after just one session with William. Would recommend this clinic totally.”
